- Always wash your hands thoroughly with a mild soap, rinse well, and dry with a lint-free towel before handling your GP contact lenses.
- Avoid using soaps or liquid hand wash/cleansers that contain cold cream, lanolin, or perfumes.
- Avoid using cosmetics before handling your GP contact lenses, as these substances can adhere to lens surfaces, affecting both vision and wearing comfort.
- Handle the lenses with your fingertips carefully to avoid contact with your fingernails.
Handling your GP Lenses
Preparing your GP lenses for wearing
Practice good hygiene with proper lens wear and care techniques for a healthy GP lens-wearing experience.
Cleanliness is the first and most important aspect of proper contact lens care. When handling your lenses, your hands should be cleaned and free from foreign substances.
Develop the habit of always wearing the same lens first to avoid mix-ups.
Remove the lens from its storage case and ensure the contact lens is clean and free of any chips or cracks.
Lens insertion
- Remove the lens from its storage compartment.
- Rinse the lens with a new, fresh Boston conditioning solution (do not rinse with tap water).
- Inspect the lens, and ensure that it is clean and free of any chips or cracks.
- Apply several drops of conditioning solution over the lens surface.
- Place the lens on top of the index finger of your dominant hand, and with the same hand, place the middle finger close to the lower lash and hold down the lower lid.
- Use a finger on your other hand to lift the upper lid and then gently place the lens on the eye. It is not necessary to press the lens against the eye.
- Gently release the lids and blink, and the lens will center automatically. Check your distance vision immediately after insertion to ensure proper lens wear.
- Use the same technique when inserting the other lens.
Note: If you experience blur vision after the lens insertion, check for the following:
- The lens is not fit in the center of the eye
- If the lens is centered, remove the lens and check for the following:
- There are cosmetics or oils on the lens – clean, rinse, disinfect, and place the lens on the eye again.
- The lens is in the wrong eye.
- If your vision is still blurred after checking the above possibilities, remove both lenses and consult your eye care practitioner.
Centering your GP lenses
On certain occasions, a lens may become displaced onto the sclera (the white part of the eye) due to incorrect techniques performed that most likely occur during lens insertion or removal. Such an incident may also happen during normal lens wear.
- Close your eyelids and gently massage the lens into place through the closed lids, or
- Gently manipulate the lens onto the cornea while the eye is open using finger pressure on the upper or lower lid next to the edge of the lens.
Lens removal
It is recommended that you have the lens care solution ready before removing your lenses. Two recommended methods:
Blink Method
- Place a clean towel under your eyes on the table to catch the lens.
- Place your index finger at the outer junction of your upper and lower lids.
- Stretch the skin outward and slightly upward while keeping your eye wide open (do not allow your lid to slide over the lens or your eyelids to close).
- Blink briskly. The contact lens will be pinched by the pressure of your eyelids and pop out onto the clean towel surface or your palm.
Two-finger method
- Place a clean towel under your eyes on the table to catch the lens.
- Place the tip of the forefinger of one hand on the middle of the upper lid margin and the forefinger of the other hand on the middle of the lower lid margin.
- Press the lid margins inward and together, where the lens should wedge out of your eye onto your hand or towel.
- The lens may move over onto the white part of your eye, should this occurs, re-center the lens onto your cornea before repeating the removal procedure.
- Remove the other lens by following the same procedure.
Caring for your GP Lenses
1 – Clean it
- After removing the lens, place the concave side of the lens up on the palm.
- Drip two drops of OCUVIQ® Cleaner on the lens.
- Gently rub each lens surface for 20 seconds in a circular motion.
2 – Rinse it
Rinse the lens using an adequate amount of saline solution recommended by your eye care practitioner to thoroughly remove the OCUVIQ® Cleaner and debris from the lens surfaces.
3 – Disinfect it
Place each lens into the proper lens well of the lens case. Fill a new, fresh OCUVIQ® Conditioning solution into each lens well and close the case covers, allowing the lenses to soak for the recommended time.
4 – Rewet it
Relieve minor dryness, irritation, and discomfort during lens wear with OCUVIQ® Aquawet Drops.
